When we bought our home, it only had 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The master bedroom was downstairs, and while it did have a master bathroom complete with dual vanity sinks, a bathtub, and a shower, we knew that it wasn’t going to work for us. So, we divided up the bedroom space to accommodate our office, a walk-in closet, and a bedroom. From there, we changed out the layout of the bathroom include a large tub, a water closet, a linen closet, and dual vanities. But the question became…. where do we put a NEW master suite?? The answer: in the addition!

Our current addition is housed under the existing carport! In fact the original structure is still there above all the drywall. When we had scribbled down our plans (we drafted plans for everything ourselves versus using an architect), we knew we had enough space to plot out a laundry room, mudroom, and master suite complete with walk-in closet and bathroom. BUT we were bound by some structural constraints that left the bathroom’s size impacted. So, we did the best we could to squeeze in everything we wanted.

To save money, we did our best to keep the plumbing relatively close to the main house. So, we decided to place our master bathroom in what was once the laundry room. I’m not going to lie…. this space was a little scary! It had water damage, mold, a really foul smell, and a million spiders. I had actually never stepped into the space until AFTER a bulk of the renovation was complete. After several revisions when we had a clear picture of the space after demolition, we got creative with the tub placement and had to snag some space for the water closet from the laundry room, BUT we were able to fit a large tub, a walk-in shower, water closet, and dual vanities just perfectly! It’s not a huge bathroom, but it is plenty functional!

In terms of design, I wanted to keep it light and bright. I wanted to make it feel like our sanctuary with lots of white, traditional touches like subway tile, and clean lines. I also wanted to keep the house in the same time period as the original home and did NOT want it to feel like two completely separate spaces. So, we kept everything classic with white cabinetry, oil-rubbed bronze, marble-patterned flooring. I did want to bring a touch of warmth through wood accents and choose a white oak tone, which I think compliments the space!

In order to save time and money, lot of the materials we used came from resources like Floor and Decor, Seconds and Surplus, Amazon, and Facebook market place.

We still have a lot more projects to complete before we can check this space off our list, but we are steadily getting there! The biggest ticket items are: enclosing the shower in glass, vertical shiplap, custom linen closet, baseboards, and trim! Once we are able to knock out that punch list – this will be our ultimate sanctuary from the kids! LOL!

But we are getting there!! We can’t wait for the reveal!

Until Next Time,
