In our line of profession, built-ins are ALL the rage. They provide storage, add functionality, and create a fun space to décor and display! But sometimes choosing exactly what you need can be an overwhelming process! There are dimensions! There is design! There are SO.MANY.COLORS to choose from!
So, where do you start???
- Ask yourself: what is the function of this space and how will this space be used? It’s a simple question with a HUGE impact because it will help you identify your priorities! Do you need storage? Do you need countertop space? Do you need desk space? Is this for your children? Will this hold books of lots or décor? Do you need drawers or file drawers? These are all important things to consider when you’re developing your built-in lay-out! The more you can hone in on the function of your space, the easier it will to narrow down what your built-in NEEDS to have.
- Dimensions are probably one of the most overwhelming discussions for our clients. Here are some standard dimensions to help you visualize your process! Of course, if your space needs a completely custom build, these can always be tweaked, but it’s good to have a baseline. (The length will typically depend on your space. So, those dimensions are not included here.)
- Standard bench: 18” high and 18” deep
- Standard Lower Cabinet: 36” high and 24” deep (Kitchen)
- Standard Lower Cabinet: 36” high and 18” deep (Elsewhere)
- Standard Upper Cabinet: 42” high and 12” deep (Kitchen)
- Standard Bookcase Uppers: 60” high and 12” deep
- Standard Table: 30” high and 36” wide
- Standard Twin Size Bed: 38’ wide and 72” long
- Standard Desk: 30” high and 24” deep
- Design Inspiration: One Word – Pinterest! Go crazy and create yourself a mood board based on your priorities!
- One of the last steps in the process is choosing your colors, and there are several methods to help you find the perfect color for your space!
- Match your current trim or existing cabinetry. This is the MOST popular method for our clients. If you want a cohesive feel, matching your trim and cabinets is a safe bet to accomplishing this! Have no idea what colors were used in your home? You can either take a sample of the wood or take a door off from your kitchen and bring it to your local paint store! With a big enough sample (larger than a quarter), they should help you color match the paint! In full transparency, this does not guarantee a 100% match. Paint can vary from bucket to bucket, and the only way to ensure a 100% match is to have the original paint at your disposal, which most folks don’t have. But a color match should come pretty darn close!
- Stain it to match your current bannister, floors, or woodwork currently in the home. This is another sure-fire way to achieve cohesiveness in your home’s interior design. This tends to be a little trickier than matching your existing paint. If you happen to know the name and brand of your stain, then you are good to go! If you don’t, just note that achieving the same look may be a longer and more tedious process of color mixing, trial, and error.
- Find an accent color! If you’re looking to make a statement, this is the way to go! Popular colors for this season have been: navy, green, and charcoal. Need more inspiration? Check out these color trends for 2021!
We hope this helps you get your built-in dreams started! We can’t wait to see YOUR project updates!
